Quarterfinal Breakdown

No. 2 Philander Smith vs No. 7 Oakwood

Philander has quietly put together a pretty solid season. Is it enough to sneak out an at-large bid? Time will tell, but they can certainly help themselves out with a few wins here and obviously if they can win the GCAC Tourney they will get the leagues only auto-bid. They do it with their pace of play and defense as they lead the GCAC in fewest points allowed per game at 62.3. At 20-6 this is a team that can win the GCAC Tourney. These two teams have played relatively tight games with Philander Smith sweeping the season series.

No. 1 Tougaloo vs No. 8 SUNO

Tougaloo, in the final Coaches Poll of the season, comes in at an unofficially 26th in the NAIA. At 26-1, this is a team you expect to come into the GCAC with a chip on their shoulder and play great basketball. They have certainly played in a lot of close games this year, but they always manage to find ways to win. They are a well-balanced team, led by Cameron Copeland. They swept the season series against SUNO and will look to make it 3 straight against them tonight. SUNO, in their first year of bringing athletics back, is just 2-22 on the season and haven’t won a game since November 3rd. They have a big uphill climb today.

No. 3 Dillard vs No 6 Fisk

Dillard is the 3rd of the 3 favorites to win the GCAC Title. At 17-7, they have had a solid year. They have the talent, led by the GCAC leading scorer, Kenyon Duling. This is a team that has won 3 straight games coming into the tourney and took Tougaloo to a 4pt game in early February. They also just beat Fisk on Feb. 12th by 37pts. If they don’t overlook Fisk, they should find themselves in the Semifinals.

No. 4 Wiley vs No. 5 Rust

Not surprised to see this as an opening round matchup as both teams are so similar in almost every statistical category. They both also have a player inside of the Top 5 in scoring in the GCAC. Davonte Craven is 2nd in the GCAC in scoring and will look to help Rust get the upset over Maurice Harvey and Wiley. This Wiley team has won 3 of 4 coming into the GCAC Tourney and both of these teams split their regular season series.
