What Junior Ratings will measure

A team’s win-loss record tells only part of the story. Junior Ratings is NHR’s independent model for comparing how efficiently teams score and defend, while accounting for opponents and game pace.

  • Adjusted offense: scoring efficiency, expressed per 100 possessions and adjusted for the opposition.
  • Adjusted defense: points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for the opposition. Lower is better.
  • Adjusted net efficiency: adjusted offense minus adjusted defense.
  • Adjusted tempo: estimated possessions per 40 minutes, accounting for opponent pace.

Which games count

  • The initial model will use verified, completed, countable NAIA-versus-NAIA games with the box-score inputs needed to estimate possessions.
  • Scrimmages and exhibition games are excluded.
  • Games with an unclear designation, missing box scores or unresolved inconsistencies are withheld until verified.
  • Early-season ratings will be labeled provisional. Sparse schedules and disconnected groups of teams will not be disguised as reliable national comparisons.

An original NHR model

Junior Ratings is not KenPom, is not affiliated with Ken Pomeroy, and does not reproduce KenPom’s proprietary formula or subscription data. It uses an independently specified efficiency model and NAIA game information.

The full model specification, data coverage, calculation version and update cutoff will accompany the first numerical release. No example data or unsupported preseason ranks will be displayed as live results.
