Five Seasons Could Change Everything

The NAIA Council of Presidents has advanced a proposal that would let student-athletes compete for five seasons within the existing 10-term framework. The association’s membership will vote November 4, putting a decision with major consequences for recruiting, roster retention and player development on the calendar before the men’s basketball season is fully underway.

The National Picture

The proposal keeps the NAIA’s current terms-of-attendance structure: five seasons would have to fit inside 10 terms. It would also require 96 passed credit hours to use the fifth season and would eliminate the current 20% participation exception for seasons of competition. The separate 20% financial-aid policy is expected to remain in place for at least three years.

If the membership approves the change, an athlete who still has at least one term and one season remaining in 2026–27 could benefit beginning in 2027–28. Players who exhausted their eligibility before this academic year would not be able to return. In the association’s survey, 84% of member respondents supported moving to five seasons, and 56% preferred the model the Council of Presidents ultimately advanced.

For men’s basketball, the biggest immediate question is roster math. An extra season could reward programs that retain and develop players, but it could also tighten minutes and scholarships for younger recruits. Expect every staff to revisit its 2027 recruiting board if the measure passes.

Stock Watch

↑ ON THE RISE: Veteran continuity — If the measure passes, programs with strong retention and graduate pathways could keep experienced guards and frontcourt anchors for another season.

↓ WATCH CLOSELY: Roster flexibility — Five seasons inside 10 terms would reduce the value of traditional redshirt planning and force staffs to balance returning veterans against opportunities for freshmen and transfers.
