Week 2 NAIA Hoops Report editorial award winners

Week 2 gave us plenty to talk about! Morningside knocked off the preseason No. 1, Texas A&M–San Antonio delivered a ranked upset, and the Remy produced a two-point top-10 battle. Add in some big individual performances and a finish that came down to the final three seconds, and we have our latest Recap by Categories.

These are NAIA Hoops Report’s editorial awards. Rankings referenced below come from the October 21 NAIA preseason coaches’ poll, not NHR rankings. The recap covers October 26–November 1, with Triston Conger’s three-game statistical window identified separately.

Best Win Morningside

Best Win Morningside Week 2

Morningside 83, No. 1 Grace 68. The Mustangs entered at No. 25 and left with a 15-point win over the team at the top of the preseason poll. Alex Wilcoxson poured in 31 points, including 25 after halftime, to help Morningside finish the job at the Crossroads/GPAC Challenge. Beating No. 1 is a headline on its own. Doing it by that margin makes this our Best Win of Week 2. Official final

Upset Texas A&M–San Antonio

Upset Week 2

Texas A&M–San Antonio 89, No. 17 The Master’s 82. The Jaguars earned their place in a week full of ranked teams getting beat. An 89-point performance and a seven-point win over the Mustangs give TAMUSA our Upset of the Week. That is a result worth remembering as we get further into the nonconference schedule. Official result

Game of the Week LSU Shreveport and Georgetown

Game of the Week Week 2

The Remy gets its spot! No. 9 LSU Shreveport edged No. 7 Georgetown 63–61 on October 30 at the Remy Williams Memorial Classic. Georgetown had beaten No. 3 Arizona Christian the day before, but the Pilots came away with this top-10 matchup. Two ranked teams separated by one possession is a fitting choice for our Game of the Week. Official final

Offense Talladega

Offense Week 2

The Tornadoes put up 97 in a win over No. 23 William Carey, then followed with 98 against Faulkner. That is 195 points across those two weekend wins, including a 98–75 result against the Eagles. Talladega gave us back-to-back reasons to pick its offense this week. William Carey result · Faulkner result

MVP Zyier Beverly of St Thomas

MVP Week 2

Beverly delivered against both Bethel and Freed-Hardeman. He scored 24 points on 8-for-9 shooting in the win at Bethel, then went for 26 points, seven rebounds and four blocks as St. Thomas beat No. 2 Freed-Hardeman 76–70. Those are two strong performances, with the second coming in a road win over the preseason No. 2. Beverly gets our Week 2 MVP. Freed-Hardeman game box score

Defensive MVP Ellis Graham of Coastal Georgia

Defensive MVP Week 2

Ellis Graham takes our Week 2 Defensive MVP honor after recording five blocks in Coastal Georgia’s win over Andrew College. Graham’s five rejections give the Mariners an individual defensive standout on this week’s award list.

Coach Trent Miller of Morningside

Coach Week 2

Miller’s week included an 83–68 win over No. 1 Grace on October 30 and a 94–82 win over Huntington on October 31. The Mustangs followed their headline upset with another double-digit victory, scoring 177 points and winning those two games by a combined 27. Alex Wilcoxson’s 31-point effort against Grace helped set the tone, but this coaching honor recognizes both wins—not just the one over No. 1. Morningside gave us a strong weekend, and Miller takes our Coach of the Week award. Official Grace postgame · Official NAIA October 31 results

Defense Oklahoma Wesleyan

Defense Week 2

Three wins. Just 56.3 points allowed per game. Oklahoma Wesleyan earns our Defense of the Week award for a 3–0 run across October 26–November 1:

  • October 26: OKWU 83, Our Lady of the Lake 52. OLLU’s scoring average entering the game was 90.0 points; the Eagles held the Saints 38 points below that mark and won by 31.
  • October 30: OKWU 71, Texas Wesleyan 53. Texas Wesleyan’s scoring average entering the game was 83.0 points; Oklahoma Wesleyan held the Rams 30 points below that mark in an 18-point win.
  • October 31: OKWU 89, No. 8 Langston 64. Langston’s scoring average entering the game was 97.0 points; the Eagles held the Lions 33 points below that mark and won by 25.

That is 169 points allowed across three games, with no opponent reaching 65. The Eagles won those games by a combined 74 points, giving us more than one night to highlight. Complete official OKWU schedule.

Pippen Triston Conger of Life

Pippen Week 2

Conger takes our Pippen award. Across the three-game October 25–November 1 window, he averaged 23.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game. He shot 20-for-26 from the floor, 4-for-4 from three and 27-for-33 at the line, with scoring nights of 36 against East Georgia and 33 against Southeastern. Scoring that efficiently while also creating for teammates gives Life’s Conger plenty to celebrate.

Onions Aric Winczewski of Dickinson State

Onions Week 2

Four points in the final three seconds to beat Midland. That is the finish that gives Dickinson State’s Aric Winczewski our Onions award. There is not much time to work with in three seconds, but Winczewski’s late scoring is the moment we are recognizing this week.

Sniper Parker Penrod of Rio Grande

Sniper Week 2

Eight threes and 34 points! Parker Penrod of Rio Grande takes our Week 2 Sniper award after helping the RedStorm beat No. 22 Madonna 86–84 on October 30. Penrod went 8-for-14 from three (57.1%), 10-for-18 overall (55.6%) and a perfect 6-for-6 at the line. He added four assists and two rebounds in 35 minutes. In a two-point ranked win, that kind of shooting gives us plenty of reason to put Penrod in the Sniper spot. Official box score

Stock Riser Montana Tech

Stock Riser Week 2

The Orediggers beat No. 16 College of Idaho 83–71, then followed with a 96–62 win over Park Gilbert. Montana Tech entered the week receiving votes in the preseason poll and put together a weekend that deserves attention. A ranked win followed by a 34-point victory makes the Orediggers our Stock Riser. Official Frontier schedule and results

Rodman Jyheim Spencer of UNOH

Rodman Jyheim Spencer Week 2

Jyheim Spencer of UNOH takes our Week 2 Rodman award after grabbing 28 rebounds across the two games highlighted here—14.0 per game. Spencer pulled down 18 rebounds in one outing and 10 in the other, including eight offensive rebounds combined. His 18-rebound performance also featured six points, five steals and three assists; he added eight points and a block alongside the 10 rebounds in the other game. That is a pair of double-digit rebounding performances worthy of the Rodman spot.

Sophomore Malachi Okunbor of Oklahoma Wesleyan

Sophomore Week 2

Malachi Okunbor is our Sophomore of the Week after averaging 14.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.0 assist during Oklahoma Wesleyan’s 3–0 week. He totaled 44 points, shooting 13-for-25 from the floor (52.0%), 5-for-11 from three (45.5%) and 13-for-15 at the line (86.7%). Okunbor opened with 18 points, four rebounds and four steals in 18 minutes against Our Lady of the Lake on October 26, then added eight points, two rebounds and an assist against Texas Wesleyan on October 30. He closed with 18 points, three rebounds and an assist in the October 31 win over No. 8 Langston, going 4-for-11 overall, 1-for-5 from three and 9-for-11 at the line. Two 18-point performances and efficient shooting across three wins make a strong week for the Eagles’ sophomore. OLLU box score · Texas Wesleyan box score.

Freshman Brady Scholl of Indiana Wesleyan

Freshman Week 2

Brady Scholl is our Freshman of the Week after a big opening weekend for Indiana Wesleyan. He made an immediate impression with 24 points and nine rebounds in the Wildcats’ 90–66 win over Indiana Tech on October 30.
